BATTLESTAR GALACTICA:SEASON 4 Review

I would describe the first half of this season as occasionally mind-blowing, always gripping. It wasn't perfect, certainly, but it was pretty close. Each of this season's episodes was consistently good, compared to some of the weaker stand-alone episodes in the second half of seasons 2 and 3. BSG has made a successful and compelling transformation from a black/white, us vs. them SciFi/action series into a morality tale about peaceful coexistence, and every step of the way has been executed brilliantly. I'm eagerly awaiting the finale, though I would have welcomed additional seasons.

Also, I'm going to join the other reviewers asking people to stop posting 1-star reviews based on something completely unrelated to the quality of the show or something about the DVD set itself. Complain about the price, or the fact that it's split in half again (though the latter is due more to the writer's strike than anything), but don't come here to complain about problems downloading episodes. Over half of the 1-star reviews have nothing to do with the show or the DVDs.

The Magic Sword [VHS] Review

The Magic Sword might seem a bit childish and hokey but it's actually quite a bit of fun fantasy. It has some scarry moments for the youngest and could cause nightmares for the more impressionable but with all the incredible advances in special effects the kiddies are exposed to these days they will probably laugh at this, but I loved it !! It was released in 1962 and was reviewed by Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine the same year. It was directed by Bert I. Gordon and stars Gary Lockwood (2001 A Space Odyssey '68), Richard Kiel (The Spy Who Loved Me '77, Moonraker '74. Eeagh! '62), Anne Helm (Follow That Dream '61), Basil Rathbone (The Adventures of Robin Hood, etc. etc. etc...) and Maila (Vampira) Nurmi. This is probably the best thing Bert I. Gordon ever did. Bert directed Begining of the End and Earth vs the Spider. Later in his career he did Food of the Gods and Empire of the Ants.

Basil kidnaps our princess to feed to the dragon. The king is promising half the kingdom and the girl's hand in marriage, and now you should know where Terry Gilliam went with this promise in Jabberwocky '77. We've got 7 deadly curses and all the actors are obviously having quite a bit of fun along the way.

In 2003 Alpha released a DVD of this but the quality was ABYSMAL. This new release is reportedly in widescreen and one can hope that with the proper attention now we will get the quality the DVD medium offers if handled correctly.

OK, now it's been released and I was pleasantly surprised to see a very good quality DVD. It's widescreen and the clarity is pretty darn good for as old as this movie is. There's alot of rich color, maybe too much but it 's not as saturated as say, The Quiet Man which was way too thick in color saturation. Now I recommend this higher than originally anticipated and give it 4 stars. There's no extras to speak of but I think it's worth the price just to get a good copy of this. The MGM release is the only one to get. Enjoy.

The most expensive film in the history of French cinema is an exhilarating and highly personal love story, an ode to the director's two passions: Paris and Juliette Binoche, who was nominated for a French Best Acress "oscar" for her convincing portrayal of a young painter with failing eyesight. While hanging out at Paris' Pont-Neuf, she meets a fire-eating punk, played by Denis Lavant, and they fall in love. After a grimly realistic opening among the down and outs of Paris, the story slowly turns into a strartlingly memorable magical fantasy, whith the magnificent city of Paris as the backdrop for some of the most visually amazing scenes every filmed.

Les Amants du Pont-Neuf Review

Lovers on the Bridge is an intensely disturbing but ultimately life affirming film about a young woman artist named Michele, who after being jilted by her Lover decides to take to the street and live as a vagabond. She eventually takes up residence, with her cat Louisiana,on a bridge in Paris over the Seine river that's closed for repairs. She meets a young homeless man named Alex who has been on the street, the bridge in particular, much longer than Michele. He's lonely and he falls for her instantly. She's terrified of intimacy after what happened with her former Lover. To complicate matters, she has a rare eye disease that is destroying her eyesight.Binoche is totally convincing in her role. She conveys intelligence and an ethereal quality, you wonder how she could have come into this situation. It's easily an Oscar caliber performance. You wonder if she actually did live on the street during production.Denis Lavant as Alex,an insecure, shy, but ever hopeful street performer is just as effective as Binoche. You can feel his pain and frustration just by watching the expressions on his face.In spite of the situation he's in,he still inspires hope. The Director takes great care with the subject matter. He handles the issue of homelessness with compassion, respect, and affection. He wisely remains objective and allows the viewer to simply watch Michele and Alex's relationship develop. He never attempts to get you to pity or feel sorry for them.My only complaint with the story is that we never learn enough about Alex's past. How he reached this point and why.Filled with lush cinematography(the streets of Paris, the Seine river, some classic art work),an honest portrayal of the homeless, terrific performances by a talented cast, and some mesmerizing visuals(a fireworks display, water skiing on the Seine,Alex as a human flamethrower),Lovers on the Bridge is a film well worth your time.

Superman Returns [Blu-ray] [Import allemand] Review

I remember seeing Superman IV in the theaters when I was six, how there were so many people swarming all around, how there was excitement. Clearly it was a shoddy movie, but to a kid you just can't buy that kind of palpable movie madness.

Now I'm as old as my parents were when they saw the very first Superman, and I've got to say this must be what it felt like. I think Bryan Singer is fast becoming one of the most respectable directors in Hollywood, and what he did with this movie--on a far, far grander scale than either of his X-Men movies--merits SOME kind of award come Oscar time.

We all know the story--Kryptonian boy comes to Earth, saves man from the foibles of archnemesis Lex Luthor, woos Lois Lane. Singer and Co. decided to have this movie pick up after Superman II (wise move) but you never really get a jarring sense of chronology--no General Zod references here. Instead, Supe has just returned from a nearly five-year journey to see if anything remains of his homeworld; alas, the answer is no.

What's strange is that him being gone is such a small deal when it comes to the overall movie. But that's okay; there's plenty more fantastic things to keep the average moviegoer and Superman afficionado happy. What I love most about this sequel is that so much of it feels like home--Brandon Routh has moments where he looks exactly like the dearly departed Christopher Reeve, and his voice is dead-on most of the time. He quotes several lines from the first movie to great effect. Kate Bosworth as Lois isn't as quirky as Margot Kidder but she still can't spell, and she does the best job I've seen in a long time of playing the "strong female" role without ever drawing your attention to it.

The plot also feels familiar--Superman spends a night righting wrongs across the world; Luthor AGAIN gets hold of that Adis Ababa kryptonite, and Supe AGAIN falls prey to it; but there are intriguing elements dealing with Fortress crystals that take Luthor into land-grabbing madness like we've never seen.

The special effects are superb, of course; you can't spend almost $300 million and get it wrong! Here is where I thought Singer might overdo things, but his restraint is commendable. He allows Routh to do all the old Superman things and yet they don't feel aged at all. Singer was concerned with how to entertain a generation where flying is no longer the spectacle it once was, and yet, watching the movie, it's hard to believe that any kid, no matter how jaded, could scoff at what's on screen. The movie is that well done.

Don't let detractors fool you. This kind of movie only comes along...once every thirty years or so.

Thor - Combo Blu-ray 3D active + Blu-ray 2D + DVD + copie digitale Review

Thor is Marvel's best superhero movie yet. It is even better than the first Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk films. It is also the most visually stunning of any Marvel film, with gorgeous fantasy settings, great costumes, and spectacular special effects.

In the same way as Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight worked just as well as a crime drama as a superhero movie, Thor works just as well as a standalone fantasy film. Even if I had not known that I was watching a comic book movie, I would have been just as happy with the story. In fact, I would say that you don't actually need to be familiar with the characters or the comic mythology to enjoy the film.

The story is set half in Asgard, the realm of the gods, and half in our world, Earth. Thor, the son of the king of Asgard, the wise Odin, is a proud and arrogant king-in-waiting. He makes a foolish mistake that brings his world to the brink of war and his father exiles him to our world as punishment, and maybe to teach him how to be a better man. On Earth, Thor makes some new friends and even begins to fall in love with a pretty scientist. Meanwhile, in Asgard, his brother Loki begins to put into motion a plot that may threaten Thor's home.

Two things about the film really stood out to me. The first is the absolutely beautiful settings and solid world-building in the movie. Asgard looks amazing, with settings such as the Rainbow Bridge, a crystal structure with colored lights running through it, spanning a sea that flows into a massive waterfall, cascading down into the open cosmos. Also, great costuming really makes the gods stand out, and adds to the film's epic feel. The second thing was the character of Loki, the film's antagonist. Watching the trailers, I expected a greasy, honorless villain (someone like Wormtongue from the Lord of the Rings). Instead I got the story of a hero, told in reverse. Loki's story mirrors his brother Thor's, but where Thor starts out as an arrogant royal brat and through his time on Earth comes to realize what it means to be a hero, Loki begins the story as a mischievous but honorable man, and over the course of the film turns into a really bad guy. As Thor rises, he falls. And when his final plan is revealed at the end of the film, it totally fits his personality and everything you know about him. In other superhero films, we're used to seeing the bad guy go on some kind of mindless rampage at the end of the film. We saw it in The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, the Spider Man movies, the Fantastic Four...but not here. Loki acts like a man with a purpose. Actually he has two purposes, both very personal to him. One is to do commit a terrible act of destruction, partly out of self-loathing and partly out of a twisted sense of honor toward his father. And the other is simply to beat his brother, proving himself Thor's equal. He is easily the deepest villain of any of the Marvel films so far.

The film is directed by Shakespearean actor Kenneth Branagh (Gilderoy Lockhart!), who handles the epic material perfectly. More than any Marvel film so far, this one focuses on the hero's journey. Even more than a comic book movie, this is a fantasy film about a hero. Expect father-son drama, palace intrigue in the realm of the gods, and an epic confrontation between two brothers who have been become very different people over the course of the story. There is also plenty of humor, with a few real laugh-out-loud moments. And there is a very sweet, almost cute romance woven into the story. It carries an innocent, young-love kind of feeling. It also takes the two characters, one a god more concerned with war and glory, the other a scientist more concerned with solving the mysteries of the universe, and brings them down to earth in their budding love for one another.

I would recommend Thor to any lover of fantasy films, as well as any fans of comic book movies such as Marvel's Avengers lineup. It is solid fantasy fun with a strong sense of the epic and the heroic. And when you see Thor finally wield his hammer and summon the lightning, you'll want to stand up and cheer.
