Jack Frost Review

I am a grown woman but have a soft spot for this movie. I could watch it everyday till the day I die and never get sick of it. The soundtrack I even like. Micheal Keaton is amazing in everything. I must warn you though, bring the tissues. I cry like a baby during this movie. It's sad. A struggling musician who dies when his son Charlie is 11 on christmas. Then a year later things are hard for Charlie and Gab (the wife). Jack (the dad) comes back as a snowman and freaks Charlie out. It gives a good message. You can always talk to someone when they're in your heart. Never let go of that. One of my personal favorites.

affentraum Review

Marco Ferreri made some of the most peculiar, idiosyncratic, and controversial films of the twentieth century, and his first film in English, "Bye Bye Monkey," definitely fits those three criteria. Ferreri's films are generally compelling if difficult exercises in surrealism and social commentary. This film is rife with symbolism and interpersonal conflicts, and serves as a commentary on the changing social mores of the 1970s, and particularly focuses on the changing perceptions of women in society. Apparently. Some of the symbolism and content is quite opaque, and there is plenty of room for interpretation. Another interpretation is that it's a film featuring long boring stretches of nothing and a monkey. (That just doesn't sound as good.)

Heading the cast are Grard Depardieu as Lafayette and Marcello Mastroianni as Luigi, two eccentric immigrants living in a New York City that is even more pretentious and rat-infested than in reality. Lafayette lives in an apartment that is apparently half service station bathroom and half rat farm judging from its ambiance, and works as a stagehand and production assistant for a very off-Broadway women's theater group. The seven actresses have a distaste for men in general and Lafayette in particular (though his boorish behavior rightfully earns their scorn,) which leads to my question: if they are all about feminism, why didn't they hire a female stagehand? After Lafayette unwittingly assists in the most distasteful actor's workshop ever, he and Luigi find King Kong's body lying next to the water in front of the World Trade Center towers (the film was made in 1977.) They discover a baby chimpanzee nuzzled up to Kong, and in one of Mastroianni's worst fits of overacting ever, Luigi explains that Lafayette should adopt the chimp because he has allergies to ape hair. (!) When consulted on the issue Andreas Flaxman (James Coco, who steals the show) advises Lafayette to ditch the monkey: "You must get rid of this quadruped immediately....Forget the dictates of your heart!" Thank goodness he doesn't take the advice, as the chimp is by far the most appealing cast member.

As the film progresses Lafayette gets into a weird relationship triangle (I dare not call it a "love triangle" here) with two women. This plot element is truly offbeat, and his decisions are definitely not where my own would have been. Not only does Lafayette not get rid of the monkey he takes it to a registrar and lists it as his child, named "Cornelius Lafayette." This attachment to his chimp is oddly noble, but ends up costing him dearly in the end. I suppose that's a commentary on the nature of love and the fragility of the mortal world, but you interpret for yourself.

Some of the plot defies simple description, and some of the techniques are painful to endure as a viewer. First there is the whistling. Lafayette uses a referee's whistle to scare the rats, his eternal foes, away. He becomes so fond of it he begins to use it to communicate instead of dialogue. This is a bit of a mixed blessing, but I found it profoundly annoying. Along the same grating lines, the film features intermittent musical numbers, the less said of which the better: my only comment is that after the singing you will probably be glad to hear the whistle again. The film also incorporates many other cultural artifacts, mostly through Flaxman's wax museum dedicated to Roman antiquity. I actually enjoyed Coco's part in the film more than any of the other (human) actors, as he is passionate and intense, while still being loon crazy. In a tribute to the big government conspiracy theories so popular after Watergate, Flaxman is visited by a psychological agent from the government who wants him to modernize the look of the wax statues for a more modern time. He demonstrates how Caesar should be made to look like JFK, while Nero is made to look like Nixon in a bit of symbolism that's hard to miss. ("You put Nixon's head on Nero's body!") Nixon is also given a zither (it's not a fiddle anyway) of some sort to hold. This didn't surprise me, as Ferreri's Nixon predilection is seen in some of his other work as well. The film concludes in a genuinely dismaying manner, and careful observers might have seen it coming. In retrospect I should have, but didn't as by the time the ending rolled around I was a distinctly disinterested observer.

The DVD has a difficult menu to get to work correctly, and the disc didn't want to play on one of my DVD players at all. There is a bonus feature of a short snippet from the documentary "Marco Ferreri: The Director Who Came From The Future" included (other parts are scattered all over other works in his catalogue.) The image is fairly good for this vintage of film, and the photography is stunning. Imagery overcomes substance in many places (white gas masks, James Coco bursting into flames, etc.) and from a purely visual perspective the film is interesting. That the plot meanders all over creation and frequently approaches senselessness are its biggest problems, and while fans of 1970s surrealism, Ferreri, Depardieu, Mastroianni, or Coco may glean pleasure from it, "Bye Bye Monkey" is not a film for most viewers.

Fallen Review

Fallen is underrated, as I felt it wasn't nowhere near as bad as some critics said it to be. It's a very interesting mix of The Exorcist and The Silence of the Lambs and Seven. The result is one of the best thrillers of the decade. It's not quite up there with Lambs or Seven but it's as good as Arlington Road and is significantly superior to The Bone Collector and Kiss the Girls. The plot is about Detective John Hobbes (Denzel Washington), who has just captured serial killer Edgar Reese (Elias Koteas). Before Reese is executed, he speaks to Hobbes in a strange language and tells him a riddle, asking him why there's a space between Lyons and Spakowsky. Hobbes doesn't think much of this and watches silently as Reese is executed in the gas chamber. The next day, another murder occurs, and Hobbes and his partner Jonesy (John Goodman) check it out. To his shock, Hobbes finds the same riddle Reese told him scrawled on the wall of the victim's apartment. Unraveling the clue and with the help of an intelligent woman named Gretta Milano (Embeth Davidtz), he discovers that a demon called Azazel had inhibited the body of Reese and can switch from one human host another with a simple touch. The premise itself is chilling, yet I was a bit hesitant to watch this film. The critics' reviews were mixed but all of them seemed to agree that the film was a bit slow moving. The truth is, Fallen is a bit slow for the first forty or so minutes, but the last eighty minutes are full of intriguing ideas that are well explored along with plenty of extremely suspenseful scenes, especially the ending, which, by the way, has a great twist.Regarding the suspenseful moments of the film, they can truly be described as edge of your seat. One of the most harrowing sequences in this film is an original chase scene that involves the domino effect, where the demon chases after Davidtz by passing from one human host to another. There's also the chilling scenes where Washington has to try and keep up with who Azazel has just possessed.Fallen's greatest aspect, despite all those truly thrilling and very suspenseful scenes, is its ending. It first involves a very clever plan being unfolded by one of the characters and ends with a great and unpredictable plot twist. This is truly one of the most unpredictable endings I have seen. It might not have as much of the shock power as the edgy (and twisty) climaxes of Seven and Arlington Road (or for that matter, The Sixth Sense), but it's just as surprising if not more. The performances in this film are solid. Denzel Washington is fine as the detective who is much more clever than Azazel thinks. John Goodman is his usual solid self as Hobbes' partner, and he excels in this role, proving he has a lot of range ever since his show Roseanne was cancelled. Embeth Davidtz's performance is okay though her character is slightly underwritten. The real scene stealer, though, is Elias Koteas. Though he's in the film for five minutes his Edgar Reese character is scary and actually a bit fun to watch. Most of the characters are well-developed and this helps us care for Hobbes and his family. The script by Nicholas Kazan is well-written and the twist in the end makes it better to appreciate and Gregory Hoblit's use of a dark, edgy atmosphere and mood is undeniably effective. Ocean Wilds [VHS] Review

If you want facts about herring look no further. If you were silly enought to buy "Realm of the Killer Whales" To learn about orcas you will be very disappointed. Id say 85% of this over priced pile of DVD was about the plight, breeding, and harvesting of herring. They talk about alot of animals that have nothing to do with the killer whales outside of living in the ocean.
Most of the killer whale scenes are above the water. The only thing that saved this dvd is the last 5 or 6 minutes showing killer whales under the water engaging in the unusual behavior of rubbing the bodies along a pebble beach. That was pretty cool. No hunting, no up close, no shark cage perspective. I didnt even see an ivory orca tooth from begining to end. I havent watched the Sperm whale documentary. However when I do I expect to learn alot about the life cycle of freekin tunas or something. I GOT ROBBED.

White Fang Review

This is an absolutely incredible story that touches your soul and warms your heart. The development of the relationship between a younger and an older man, compliments and mirrors in many ways the development of the relationship between the young man and the wolf/dog. Compassion, trust, love, pain...all of these abound in this movie. In addition to the touching story is the awesome Alaskan landcape and sceenery. We own this movie and have watched it many times, yet we never tire of it's honesty. A highly recommended movie...You won't be dissapointed!!!

Super Mario Bros. Review

Most people tend to hate this film. I think, though, that they hate it because they're looking at it the wrong way. It's one of those movies that has a point, and if you miss that, you don't get any of it.Their mistake is to watch this expecting a Mario movie. I know, it sounds like the right thing to expect, but hear me out. Fans of the game know what Mario is all about - powerups, angry mushrooms, winged turtles and flying blocks. If you watch this movie expecting that, you'll be disappointed, as you'll find NONE of it. But that's not to say it isn't worth watching.Picture the scene: a couple of directors are asked to make a Mario movie by Nintendo, and they want it to be live action. That was the flavour at the time - take cartoon characters and make them real. Now, these directors know about Mario. They say "No way can that be done. Mario is all about being a cartoon. Jumping on little angry animals, everyone's a mushroom... It's a great game, and it'd make a good cartoon, but a live action version would just be moronic." "Oh, don't worry about that," says Nintendo, "just so long as you get the main elements in, do it how you want."The directors go away, rubbing their chins, trying to think of a way to do that but still do justice to the games. And then they have a fascinating idea. What if they don't do a Mario film, exactly. What if they do a sci-fi film, but fill it to the brim with Mario references, for the keen-eyed game fans? That's what this movie is. If you watch it with that in mind, you will enjoy it. I've tested this theory out already on a friend who thought the film was a bit stupid when he saw it as a kid, but watched it yesterday with my little thesis in mind and he loved it.What you get here is a quite serious (despite the light-hearted script) sci-fi flick about the nightmarish world ours may soon become: crowded, filthy, choked with pollution and overrun with a hate-filled populace who will fight you, yell at you, even try to shoot you if you pass too close. Run by a demonic well-dressed dictator politician (played to amazing effect by Dennis Hopper) who has let this world become the dark horror it is through neglect: there is no water any more, only sludge, and a slimy infestation of fungus has grown over everything, draped in great loops like one gigantic, chaotic spider web. Into this world come Mario and Luigi, similar to their game counterparts but more human, a pair of plumber brothers from Brooklyn who grew up together as orphans. They are trying to save a girl, who has been kidnapped and dragged here, and along the way they get wrapped up in something really horrifying: the president and his people are human, but human descended from dinosaurs instead of apes. He's found a way to revert his citizens back to their prehistoric roots, and with his army of lizard lackeys he's going to bridge the split between worlds (that formed when the meteorite that "killed" the dinosaurs hit) and take over our own.And through all this we find references of the sort that Mario's biggest fans will drool over, so long as they are watching this in the way I suggest. These prove that the film has been put together not by someone ignorant of the games, but by someone very well versed in their lore. A large woman called Big Bertha, dressed all in red, is named in reference to a large red fish enemy from Mario 3. She wears mechanical boots named "Thwomp-Stompers", after the classic ice block enemies, and they are powered by capsules that look exactly like Bullet Bills, from Super Mario Bros 1. Shops are apparently owned by people with the same names as characters from the games (Hammer Bros and Bullet Bill), a protest singer is named after Toad, the happy little mushroom from the games, but his hair is shaved into the pattern on the shell of Lakitu, a fan favourite since day one. These references go on throughout the film and shape its world - the fungus, which turns out to be a conscious entity, helps the brothers in every way it can; they are saved on more than one occasion by mushrooms, in what has become a literal mushroom kingdom. It's all in here if you keep your eyes peeled. Go in ready to watch not a Mario film, but a film that references Mario, and you will love it. It doesn't "change" anything from the games, because it is not any kind of filmed version of them, but it nods to them constantly.Viewed in this light, it is a treat to watch, and a rare treat, because no other film has ever crammed in so many references to videogaming before. Simply put, a live action Mario film could never be made, and the directors asked to make one did a brilliant job at trying something new and original. Well worth the ten dollars for the DVD.
