Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban [Blu-ray] Review

Like many of you who purchased the first two ultimate editions at a pretty penny, i was expecting extended editions of movies 3 and 4. What a disappointment! Were the big wigs at WB thinking that their fans would triple dip editions when they bring out all films in one super ultimate collection? I already owned all of the HP on Blu, but sold them when i started buying the Ultimate editions. I will NOT be purchasing 3 and 4. Very poor on WB's part to say its ultimate, and include 8 hours of bonus materials, but not the few extra scenes that regularly show on TV. Very poor indeed.

The Blu-Ray of this movie is awesome, they have fixed the mistakes of the orginal DVD version, and should be rated overall five stars, the problem, Amazon, has mixed the reviews from the old dvd with the blu ray, skewing the star results and reviews, Amazon, needs to keep the review for DVDs and Blu rays seperate, even if its the same movie the format is different an offers different things, and I would like to see reviews for the blu ray not the old dvd. The Odyssey Review

As a part of teaching 7th graders ancient Greek history every spring, I have the privilege of introducing to them Homer's "Iliad" and "Odyssey". They think they know what real adventure is till they learn about Odysseus' grand voyage home from the Trojan War. And then--when we watch this movie, the students have a much greater appreciation not only for real adventure, but real literature!Filmed on location around the Mediterranean, the film captures the perilous journey of Odysseus back to Ithica and his beloved Penelope. The glaring weakness of the script is attempting to condense the Trojan War into a half-hour. Nevertheless, Achilles' slaughter of Hector is awesome, and after all--the film isn't titled 'The Iliad'.While the 7th graders enjoy the mysterious Aeolus (and his bag of winds), and less so Vanessa Williams' seductive Calypso (which gets a bit 'steamy'), there is simply nothing to compare to two scenes. First, the Scylla and Charybdis, which evoke all the surprise, blood, and special effects which today's teenager expects (without overdoing any of the three), and second, the concluding sequence where Odysseus is revealed to the wicked suitors who have "...stolen (his) world", and violated the most sacred of ancient Greek customs--hospitality. The bloodletting here is intense, but Homer would certainly have applauded the interpretation presented. Not all of Odysseus' ten adventures are included in the film. For example, we do not see the lotus-eaters, the slaughter of the cattle of Helius, the rescue by the sea nymph Ino, etc. But what we do see is wonderful! One will never forget the belching and monstrous cyclops who (again) pictures for us the unavoidable punishment Greeks felt was certain to befall the inhospitable! Also missing is the death of Odysseus' faithful dog Argos upon beholding his master's return. Finally, also missing is what would have been a great visual scene--Odysseus bound to the mast of his ship as he experienced the wonder of the deadly sirens' call--and lived to tell about it! I also found it just a bit disconcerting that although we see King Menelaus of Sparta, we see nothing of his wife Helen whose beautiful 'face launched a thousand ships' and started the whole darn Trojan War in the first place. And where is Paris...? (Oh yes, I forgot again--this is "The Odyssey"!)For me, the highlight is Odysseus' trip to the underworld to seek the blind prophet's direction on how to get back home. Though combining two of four rivers of the underworld into one (the Styx, and the Phlegethon--river of fire), the sequence loses none of the magical mystery of the Greek conception of the afterlife. Even included is the haunting meeting of Odysseus and his mother who committed suicide, in believing her son would never come home.Bernadette Peters' Circe sequence is as humerous as it is clever, and watching Odysseus' men turn back into men from animals is memorable. Nevertheless, character development is often sacrificed at the expense of trying to cover the many adventures, but I guess one can't have it both ways! The special effects are great--especially the face of Poseidon in the waves as he strives to punish Odysseus for blinding his son (the cyclops), and (as one of my students pointed out)in reality, ends up making our hero a better man, by crushing his hubris, and teaching him the ultimate Greek lesson: "...man is nothing without the gods!" Great movie! Whether they know the classic tale or not, the film will entertain teenagers (and most everyone else). But as a supplement to teaching the great literature pieces of Homer...ah, it doesn't get any better than this! Now, if the same director would only make "The Iliad".... L' Atalante Review

Earlier reviewers have complained about this DVD's quality, and I want to clear up the confusion. The way that New Yorker Films (not connected to The New Yorker magazine) has packaged this DVD is outstanding. They've specialized in more recent (i.e., post-1970) foreign films, so if this is what they can do with older films, I'd love to see them work on others. It's not quite Criterion-level quality, but considering the challenges, it's as impressive as many of Criterion's major accomplishments.

For a movie that was all but lost to us, they've has done wonders with the restoration. The aspect ratio is accurate, contrary to what one reviewer says below. Since L'Atalante was made before 1953, it CAN'T be shown in letterbox! Unfortunately, there's slight cropping at the left and top throughout the film, and it's especially notable during the opening titles. French directors of the 1930s regularly had their action overflow the frame, so it's difficult to say how much this cropping affects the rest of the film. There's also slight debris on the print, but that's unavoidable for a film of this age and history. There is also some confusion on the film's running time. The advertised 89 minutes only applies to VHS tapes. The actually film runs about 85 minutes, including the opening and closing titles. However, critics believe that this version (based on an early 1934 print and supplemented with better-quality outtakes) is as close to Vigo's intended vision as we'll ever get. He died before he could oversee a "final cut."

The extras are slim, but worthwhile. There's a filmography for Vigo and 2 galleries (one of posters and one of stills and behind-the-scene photos). Best of all is a short documentary about L'Atalante. It's called "The Making of..." but it's more of an appreciation than a history. It's a nice addition, but should be watched AFTER you see the movie. I'd have liked more detail on the restoration process, but what's here is fine.

If you like French films of the '30s (especially those of Renoir and Carne), then this DVD is a must-own. Anyone else who considers him/herself a student of cinema needs at least to rent it. Either way, rest assured that this is a fine transfer. My only reservation concerns the very slight cropping of the frame.

EDIT: Since I reviewed this DVD, Artificial Eye (a British video company) has released an excellent two-disc set called The Complete Jean Vigo, which includes this film and Vigo's four short films (including the amazing "Zero for Conduct"). Featuring 3 hours of extra content, it's well worth looking into if you have multiregional capability. The Complete Jean Vigo is only available in region 2 format.

Super Show Review

'Supershow' certainly has its limitations, but for fans of Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Roland Kirk, or Stephen Stills, this DVD is a must-see, and I suspect for many a must-own. The fifteen tracks I count are dominated by Buddy Guy, Buddy Miles, Roland Kirk and Jon Hiseman's Colosseum, all of whom perform solo, in various combinations with one another, and as backing musicians for other performers such as Stephen Stills and Glenn Campbell (prior to his emergence as a country and western performer) performing the hard-driving 'Bad Hat' with The Misunderstood. Also featured are two tracks from The Modern Jazz Quartet. An earlier release of this 1969, two day 'festival' at the Linoleum Factory near London on VHS also included a performance by Led Zeppelin, which has apparently been edited out of 'Supershow' for use on another Led Zeppelin DVD. The credits which conclude this DVD also list a performance of 'Crossroads' by Stills, Miles, and Dallas Taylor, and a rendition of 'I Say a Little Prayer' by Roland Kirk. Those tracks apparently lie on a cutting room floor somewhere.

While it is true that the mono soundtrack for these performances is less than dazzling in an era of digital perfection, those of us who grew up with scratchy, skipping vinyl albums will understand what this is all about. Even for 1969 the production appears low budget. Most of these performers, even the 'big names' like Stills and Clapton, were still relatively new on the scene, and were looking to pad their portfolio. It was also an era where superstars attempted to form supergroups, such as Stills' earlier excursion with Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper on 'Super Session' in 1968. I suppose the most 'super' pairing that came out of 'Supershow' was the first meeting between Buddy Guy and Eric Clapton, and there is brief, perhaps historic footage tacked on the end of the recording of the two blues artists trading licks in what appears to be a rehearsal session.

The music on 'Supershow' is eclectic, to say the least. While the Modern Jazz Quartet serves up jazz-lite, dominated by piano and vibes on 'Under the Jasmine Tree' and 'Visitors From Venus', it is the Roland Kirk Quartet that take jazz to unfathomable avant-garde reaches with 'Primitive Ohio' and while jamming with Buddy Miles and Eric Clapton on 'Slate 27' and Buddy Guy and Jack Bruce on a 'Stormy Monday/Kansas City' medley. It's extraordinary to watch many of these artists transfer their talents from one genre to the next.

Buddy Guy puts his exquisite talents on display several times, appearing as James Brown with a mean guitar on the fourth track, 'Mary Had a Little Lamb', also featuring Buddy Miles and Jack Bruce. Track six features Miles and Guy on 'Checking On My Baby' and 'Texas Blues', and on track nine we're treated to a solo performance of 'Hoochie Kootchie Man' on acoustic guitar. Guy, Miles, and Bruce show up once again on track twelve, serving up electric blues on 'My Time After a While'.

While it is true that Stephen Stills' contribution, relative to Kirk, Guy, and Miles, is "negligible", he absolutely blows the tin roof off the Factory with his electric rendition of 'Black Queen', tapping the talents of Jack Bruce on bass, Buddy Miles on drums, and Colosseum's horn section. It's absolutely devestating, and a rare film look at Stills pre-1970. Stephen also appears along with Buddy Miles (vocals) and Jack Bruce on 'Love Potions', the second number offered. Jon Hiseman's Colosseum round out the performances, delivering the first song along with the opening credits, and 'Debut' on track ten.

This is an easy one for audiophiles and film buffs to rip on, but those who complain about aspect ratios, sound quality, and the "atrotious editing" (actually the product of the swift juxtaposition of genres for effect) are missing it. For people who came of age in this era, 'Supershow' is an opportunity to re-experience the feel of perhaps the most experimental age in recorded music. It is also an opportunity to see some of the seminal figures of the psychedelic era on the cusp of superstardom. So don't be dissuaded by the naysayers who would reduce the value of a recording to how grainy the video is, or how clean the sound quality is. Aside from imperfections often inherent in the technology of the era, 'Supershow' lives up to its name.
