Product Description

Developed in 1947 as an image to symbolize urgency in the Cold War and the threat of nuclear disaster, the mission of the Doomsday Clock has expanded to include non-nuclear global security issues. Maintained by the Board of Directors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, it's based at the University of Chicago. In response to world events, they move the clock's minute hand closer to or away from midnight--doomsday. In this hour, we cover the clock's history, its effectiveness, and its critics.

The Doomsday Clock (History Channel) Review

"The Doomsday Clock" originated in 1947 to communicate atomic scientists' concern over the imminent possibility of these weapons being used. Originally, the time was set at 7 minutes to midnight. Since then the clock's setting has changed 17 times in accordance with the group's assessment of the long-term implications of various significant events. Examples include the U.S. development of the H-bomb, Soviet testing of a nuclear weapon, the October 1956 Suez Crisis, the October 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis (170 Russian warheads in Cuba), the October 1964 Chinese nuclear weapon test, signing of the SALT treaty in 1972, Russia's invasion of Afghanistan, Reagan's 1983 "Star Wars" initiative, India's 1974 A-bomb test, signing of the START treaty, the Pakistani bomb test in 1998, and the North Korean bomb test in 2007.

The clock currently is set at 5 minutes to midnight, reflecting not just concern over possible use of nuclear weapons by the U.S., Russia, and/or terrorists, but global warming as well. Settings over these 41 years have ranged from 2 minutes to midnight to 17.

Syriana [Blu-ray] Review

I would say this plot offers up more suspense and intriguing details than any Tom Clancy movie I've ever seen. It wasn't until about an hour into the story that things finally started to make sense. But, from that point on, I was hanging onto every word and piecing together every detail.

The trick to understanding this movie before it's over is to remember the names. Once you get to the point when you know who's who, everything else unfolds from there.

So, what's going on?

Matt Damon is a financial advisor to Prince Nassir. Prince Nassir's family just approved a deal for the chinese to come in and set up shop as oil drillers, as the chinese offered the highest bid.

However, the US wants to cut the chinese out of the picture so that the newly merged connex and the smaller oil company can do their thing in place of the chinese.

So, now we're at that scene when the old guy is talking to Prince Nassir's younger brother on the yacht. What you have to infer is that the "wish" that Nassir's younger brother wants the "cat's paw" to grant is to have his older brother, Prince Nassir, assassinated. In return for the favor, the US will get the oil contract instead of the chinese.

That's when the CIA have George Clooney arrange for Prince Nassir to be assassinated. However, you know that doesn't work out. You might recall the torture scene. After Clooney narrowly escapes certain death, the torturer threatens to reveal the CIA's assassination attempt to the media.

Next we see Clooney threatening the old man in the cafe. A trusted co-worker had informed him that the old man is setting him up to be the fall guy for any negative backlash resulting from the exposure of the failed assassination attempt.

Once Clooney is able to get his passports back, he attempts to intercept Prince Nassir on the desert freeway and warn him of the danger to his life. In the freeway scene, Nassir has re-established relations with the Chinese; and with the help of 9 out of 11 of the country's generals, he is attempting to de-throne his conniving, ambitious younger brother.

So, everything else is pretty much straightforward.

Syrania illustrates the following points of controversy:

1. The US uses its intelligence community resources to eliminate opposition to its oil interests.

2. US government watchdogs are helpless to make an impact on anti-trust violations committed by oil companies, while the intelligence community acts as an accomplice to those violations.

3. The US strategically ensures that oil producing countries do not improve their infrastructure, economy..etc., so as to keep them more easily controlled.

Again, those are the points of view illustrated by this movie; they are not my own.

Claude Lelouch - Les Uns et Les Autres(Original French ONLY Version - No English Options) Review

Every film that I have ever seen that has dealt with pre WW2 and the during and after effects all combined together in this amazing and sweeping epic film LES UNS ET LES AUTRES (roughly translated "These people and the other people") and released in America under the title BOLERO.It is difficult to give an accurate review of such a film, directed by Claude Lelouch (A Man and a Woman) because frankly it is overwhelming in it's scope and characters,as it is also a film of music and feeling that evokes the senses, and yet tells a powerful story of people's lives affected by the Holocaust, starting in the 1930's, in four different countries, four different languages, and following the after effects into the 1980's!!!! There is A LOT to take in this movie. One viewing is simply not adequate to express all that is in this film. That it is a tribute to the human spirit and to the power of music is undeniable. The characters in this film are all based from real life, except the names are changed. Some characters I could figure out such as the German Pianist/conductor Karl Kremer, who seemed a composite of Wilhelm Furtwangler (Taking Sides-the film about his complicity with Hitler)and Herbert van Karajan. The Russian ballet dancer who defected to America as Rudolf Nureyev or possibly Mikail Baryshnikov (White Nights-a film based on his defection). The other characters were harder to identify;the failed boxer and the American singer (played by Geraldine Chaplin), and the author who was abandoned on the railroad tracks as a baby! Someone will know who all of these people were that Claude Lelouch places in this tribute to music and humanity. This film is SPECTACLE and I honestly can say that in all my years of watching films,I have NEVER seen anything quite like it.It runs for 177 minutes, just slightly edited from it's original 188 minutes. The music flows from Beethoven,Ravel and Liszt to the contemporary Michel Legrand and Francis Lai.The choreography by the French great Maurice Bejart is astounding.Bejart is well known as the choreographer for the rock group QUEEN'S Queen Rock Montreal + Live Aid.The film can be a little confusing as certain actors,James Caan, Geraldine Chaplin, Nicole Garcia etc.play dual roles. You must keep up with this this film especially in the third hour when the story shifts into the 1960's and then into the 1980's.It is all there, but don't blink.

I would have never known that this film existed unless a friend had given it to me who said,"Dedicate three hours of your life, non stop, to 'experience' this film!" SHE WAS RIGHT.This is as epic and grand as any film I have ever seen.

Single Creek (Public Screening Edition) - NEW Review

This video opened my eyes to the struggles, joys, challenges and experiences of Christian single adults. The film looked at the issue from several different angles and did a wonderful job of being raw, real and genuine. If we are all part of the church family, then we need to understand what our family members are going thru. So it's very important for everyone to see this film, not just singles. I highly recommend this film.
