Hamish Macbeth: The Complete First Season Review

This little gem of a series is one of the most entertaining tv shows I've ever seen. It's funny, sad, quirky, dramatic and can make you laugh one moment and weep the next. Each of the characters is unique and brings their own brand of nuttiness to the Scottish village of Lochdubh. In the middle of it all is Constable Hamish Macbeth, solving crime while trying to stay low-key enough to not be promoted to a precinct in one of the big cities. The Scottish accents can be a bit overpowering at times but it shouldn't deter. Robert Carlyle stars as Hamish and he's wonderful (as he always is), but there are really two stars of this series that make it memorable: the incomparable scenery of Scotland and a little West Highland White Terrier by the name of Wee Jock. A warning to fans of the MC Beaton, HAMISH MACBETH mysteries...the television series bears no resemblance to the book series. The tv series and the books are entirely separate entities and should be enjoyed as such. Thank you BBC for giving the fans dvd's in the region 1 format. Please give us season 2 and 3 also. ADDED NOTE: I agree that it's a shame "West Coast Story" isn't included in this collection but you'd have to take your gripe to the US movie studio that holds the rights to the movie, "West Side Story". Because the Hamish Macbeth episode uses some of the music from the movie, the producers of the dvd either cannot afford to obtain the rights or the studio has refused to grant them permission to use this episode on the dvd. Nothing can be done and it's really too bad. However, the show is still worth having on DVD, because the five episodes you can see are brilliant.

To Serve Them All My Days Review

To Serve Them All My Days is a BBC production originally shown on Masterpiece Theater in the early 1980s. I saw it then and admired the wonderful acting, the lovely settings, and the excellent story. I am so glad it is finally available on DVD.The story revolves around young David Powlett-Jones, a shell shocked and wounded veteran of World War I who is hired to teach history at Bamfylde School in the last days of the war. David is from a Welsh coal mining family, and he has strong socialist convictions as well as a large chip on his shoulder about the priviledged youths and men he now finds himself among. This is a subtext that runs throughout the series, but the primary story deals with David's growing self confidence and abilities. There is also a romantic subtext, with David being involved with three women, a wife who dies tragically, a brief fling with another woman, and finally a second wife who is both upper class and a Labour politician, thus combining the two disparate elements in David's life.John Duttine is wonderful as the star of the series, but there is an excellent supporting cast led hy Frank Middlemass and Alan MacNaughton. Another nice aspect is the depiction of Bamfylde School itself, giving us Americans a pretty good idea of life in a British public school. Patricia Ford:Hawaii's International [VHS] Review

This independent production showcases the beautiful Patricia Ford in several short video montages, each with a different theme. She is mostly just striking poses in bathing suits, but at least two of the sequences are stunningly artistic and would put any Playboy video to shame. She presents herself as she sees herself - sexy, sincere, with a touch of innocence. It is refreshing to finally hear her voice as she describes her thoughts and feelings about her career. Most of her voice is voice-over. That's fine, but I wished that they just would have pointed the camera at her while she talked. At any rate, this video is a truly mesmerizing experience, and a must for die-hard Patricia Ford fans. It probably will become a collector's item because it can be rather difficult to obtain. Sometimes, the video simply isn't available from the distributor. If this happens to you, try the auctions. It is well worth the effort to find this video. For an independent production, it is impressive.

Violent New Breed [VHS] Review

I will not give any spoilers here, nor will I attempt to tell the involved plot to you. I will simply tell you that I found this to be a very important film for the low budget video community.Director Todd Sheets again proves himself to be a man with style, vision and the guts to actually make a movie like this one. To see this guy come from such humble (and in some cases horrible) beginnings, and to see what he is doing now, is amazing. With Violent New Breed, Mr. Sheets does not hold true to the reservations of the politically correct, or for the politics of film for that matter. And we should all thank him for it.Violent New Breed is about New York in the near future. Demons have invaded the streets with a drug called Rapture (the ultimate high) that has half the human population hooked. I found this social commentary very refreshing and honest, as opposed to other films about addiction where we are asked over and over again to feel sorry for the addict. The drug is used to cloud their minds so the demons can use them as slaves and can use the women as vessels to impregnate and carry more demons, only these are half-breeds - demon and human mixed. Thus creating a "new breed" to control the planet. The US Government knows about it and has set up a task force of sorts with the NYPD that is determined to infiltrate and destroy the breed. Of course things go really wrong and it's up to aband of thrown together strangers to pull together and save the city. This one has some incedible visuals, a fast moving 2 hour story, great music and so many ideas flowing. The film can be disturbing, funny and gross. It also features film vet Rudy Ray Moore (Dolemite) in a great part as a priest that is simply hysterical. In all honesty, this one should be selling great, it should outsell much of that trash that clutters the shelves of Blockbuster, but then again, they always play it safe and this movie NEVER does. I would recommend it to everyone with an open mind and a love for offbeat Horror. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you? Vengeance One by One [Region 2] Review

This wonderfull film is, strangely, hardly available in Europe. It is a famous film, it is an intriging and fascinating story. A wonderfull Romy Schneider! After this film, you can understand, the greatness and the sheer beauty of this actress. Phillipe Noiret is so convincing in his role, the script so good, no wonder this film is so highly rewarded! It probably won't be long and there will be a new, Hollywood version, with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. But it will never beat this version.

Product Description

Call it requesting, demanding, cajoling, exhorting, or inveigling, Professor Robert Cialdini provides fascinating insights on what makes individuals successful in their attempts to persuade all manner of other people. DVD

The Power of Persuasion (Executive Briefings: Strategies for the Competitive Edge) Review

I was really disappointed with this video. It adds nothing more than the book and costs 5 times as much. Cialdini doesn't answer the questions he poses at the beginning of his lecture nor does he add any examples beyond those he has already written about in his book. His messianic style (popping eyes) is distracting and verges on hilarious. Don't bother to buy this video.

Military Coup in Kolwezi Review

This movie was made by the French, and is heavily slanted towards French interests ,and French expats living in Kolwezi. Belgians are barely mentioned.
The movie opens with a view of an open mine (probably lifted from an old documentary). That much is authentic.
The movie does not appear to have been shot on location - I lived in Kolwezi during the early Katanga wars (years before this Kolwezi affair) and I do not recognize any of the Kolwezi landmarks nor aerial views. The paras are warned that Kolwezi is 500 meters above sea level (actually: 1,500 meters, which does not help) and there are many other inaccuracies.
The movie does a fairly good job of recreating the atmosphere of the (many) Katanga "events", but for accuracy, I recommend reading instead the excellent book "La Legion saute sur Kolwezi", available on Amazon., by Pierre Sergent. It is a lot more complete and precise (maps etc.)
