Nur die Sonne war Zeuge. DVD-Video Review

I saw this before I read the Patricia Highsmith mystery novel from which it was adapted, and before seeing the recent and excellent The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) directed by Anthony Minghella and starring Matt Damon, Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow. Here the accomplished French director Ren Clment has Alain Delon, Maurice Ronet and Marie Lafor t as his stars in this very fine interpretation. Seeing it again only confirms my high opinion.

The fact that "Purple Noon" plays well after forty years is a testament to Clment's clean, objective direction and his faithful adherence to the Hitchcock formula. Pretty poor boy goes after everything pretty rich boy has, including his yacht and his girl friend in this tightly focused thriller. We see once again--cf., Polanski's Knife in the Water (1962) and the early Nicole Kidman vehicle Dead Calm (1989)--that some very bad things can happen when you get two men and one woman on a yacht in the middle of a whole lot of water. Note too the Mediterranean rock island atmosphere reminiscent of Antonioni's L'Avventura (1960). It will probably get me into trouble with Italian film aficionados to add that it's a little surprising that both films are from the same year, inasmuch as Plein Soleil is still a treat to watch, while L'Avventura seems terribly dated. Perhaps the beautiful use of color and the charming locales and interiors so well done by Clment make the difference.

Delon is a particularly "pretty" and uncomplicated Tom Ripley, while Ronet is a somewhat nasty and macho Philippe ("Dickie" in the novel) Greenleaf, and Lafort is a very sensual and sexy Marge. All do a good job and are well directed by Cl ment whose attention to detail in all aspects of the production is admirable. The fish market scene and the scene where Ripley projects Philippe's signature on the wall in order to practice it, and especially the cold, windy feel of being aboard the yacht work very well and keep us engaged.

Comparing the Minghella film, I would say it owes something to Plein Soleil (e.g., the jazz motif, the real love between Marge and Philippe) but is essentially a different spin. Perhaps the most important difference is that there is no sexual ambiguity to Ripley's character in this film as there was in both the novel and Minghella's production. Cl ment plays it straight throughout also eschewing any sort of psychological study of Ripley's murderous nature. He even deviates from Highsmith's daring (at the time) resolution for something more traditional. Nonetheless the very clever ending is beautifully ironic and will give you a surprising jolt.

Miss d tective Review

I am sorry but I get so tired of the poor reviews so many critics write about films such as this movie that are pure enjoyment and entertainment. This movie is just that kind of movie...there is never a dull moment and isn't that part of what movies are all about. Sandra Bullock is perfect for this role and while the premise sounds a little lame before you see the movie after seeing it I think anyone will be pleasantly surprised. If you are expecting an Oscar style movie...no you won't get it. If you are expecting to laugh alot and be entertained...you will be. This movie is totally delightful and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is funny, light, laughable. I loved it and I think anyone else will too if you allow yourself to jsut be entertained. Bullock is so funny and so great at this type of movie and she learns allot about herself throughout the film so there is character growth too. It will also give you a new appreciation for what the women in beauty pageants put themselves through. Bottom line...THIS IS A GREAT MOVIE!!

Catch 22. DVD-Video Review

Finally ...... one of those DVD re-releases I've been practically holding my breath for, and was not disappointed. This criminally overlooked gem was trashed by critics upon its release in 1970, and never enjoyed a video transfer worthy of the filmmaker's effort, not even on laserdisc! And as you can see from the varying reviews, the controversy rages on. Which just proves how alive and well and timely a film Catch-22 truly is.Mike Nichols captures the essence of Joseph Heller's defining anti-war classic quite admirably, with a faithful adaptation by Buck Henry (who can be seen along with a veritable Who's Who period ensemble cast), with an eye as removed and objective as Kubrick, yet at times very visually subjective ..... an approach used to great advantage in his previous hit film The Graduate. All the verbal and ethical contradictions of the book bring its dark humor to demented life, through a kaleidoscopic cavalcade of archtypical characters who make up the living nightmare of one Captain Yossarian, who has decided he can no longer bear to fly the combat missions his superiors have made it impossible to get out of. To get out of flying, he has to be officially diagnosed as "crazy", and must request to be grounded ..... but if he requests to be grounded, then he's not really crazy, and is therefore eligible to keep flying missions. That's some catch, that Catch-22.This film, like the book on which it's based, is not so much an indictment of the insanity of war as it is a look at how the corporate mentality can find its way into the noblest of causes, and how beurocratic manipulations devaluate basic human principles, which take a back seat to merely "looking good". A timeless theme indeed. This skewed logic is cheerfully accepted by all the story's characters ..... until our Yossarian's eyes are opened to the product of that logic literally disemboweled at his fingertips (yes, that scene was put back in!), and suddenly he is the outsider whose prime mission is to avoid any more missions. Which is not an easy thing to do when Brass keeps adding more after you've completed your tour of duty.As far as the transfer itself: It has probably never looked better since the original theatrical release over 30 years ago, especially being the first widescreen release of this title, which is the only way to experience it as intended. The transfer team did the best they could with the mono soundtrack, I'm sure, which does get compressed and distorted at times, something we enthusiasts of early films live with.Mike Nichols' Catch-22 may only enjoy cult status, but it is DVD releases like this (and that other oddball, star-studded 60's curiosity Candy) that make one truly appreciate what is being done with this revolutionary medium. Hey, not all movies can be for everybody. Long live the Anti-Blockbusters! Damons Law Rutherford County Line Review

MY father was Rick Spake, one of the founders of the Hickory Nut Gorge EMS... he was one of the first responders who found "Uncle Roy."

"Uncle Roy" Huskey was a beloved friend of our family, whose death caused my family much heartbeak and sadness.

Dad's Green Pick-up truck was a staple in Rutherford County... and if someone was in need, that green truck was usually the first on the scene. I want to get this movie for my mom. Because we lost our father in October 2010 and And when people came for his funeral, they spoke of how when in times of trouble and need... that green truck was the most wonderful sight to behold. They spoke of how on that day my father was there, how he had never lost his professionalism... until he arrived and saw Uncle Roy. And he lost it.

I will forever remember being in a school bus being escorted by a police car in the front and following behind while an officer with a shotgun stood beside the driver. None of us knew what was going on when they evacuated Green Hill Elementary School... nor understood why they wouldn't let us go into our homes unless our parents were there. That they kept us kids on the bus and on the move until each one of us was delivered safely to our parents. Until my mother told me that Uncle Roy was dead, and that Dad was out trying to find the man who did it. Now everytime i see a police car with an officer inside it with their head down, I will stop and make sure they are okay. not matter what, not matter how late i am. i check on them. and i tell each one of them to never put their uniform on without their vests.

Heck, I wish they would remake this moive today... because it's a story that needs to be told today. To remind us all what duty and honor means. That when things are at their worse, doing the right thing is something you must do. Because it's the right thing. And it's how you truly show that you are indeed a human.

Oblivion - Combo Blu-Ray + Copie Num rique - Boitier m tal Review

There may be spoilers.

Some critics have panned this new film from director and co-writer Joseph Kosinski, in this his second film ("TRON: Legacy"), as being highly derivative. But let's face it, how many films are so fresh and new that they delve into uncharted territory? In any case, don't care. Whether it's a drama, a comedy, a horror movie or even a romantic comedy, it's how well it is delivered that counts. And this film delivers.

Like "TRON" the film is visually arresting. Seen on a big screen, the sets are huge but sparse, drawing the audience in. Set in a war-ravaged Earth of 2077 devoid of humans, all of whom have resettled on a moon of Saturn, only Jack (terrific Tom Cruise) and Victoria (Andrea Riseborough) remain. They are partners (both romantic and professionally) whose mission is to watch over the drones that patrol the area for a smattering of "Scavs" who were the defeated invaders. While Earth won the war, they lost the planet which continues to be harvested for water and other ecological matter.

Jack is the investigative repair man who goes out alone. Victoria never leaves their high control point and guides him using sophisticated tracking technology. While investigating an unusual radio beacon, Jack witnesses a spacecraft crash. One of the survivors is a human flight officer named Julia (Olga Kurylenko) who he has occasionally dreamed about. Both Jack and Vic have had their memories "washed" in order to eliminate thoughts of the terrible war. Uh, sure. What Jack believes to be "Scavs" turns out to be Beech (Morgan Freeman) and his collection of survivors. The truth is out there and Jack must find it, and does with the help of Julia.

Like "TRON," "Oblivion" is beautiful to watch and has a great soundtrack, mostly provided by French electronic band, M83. Yes, "Oblivion" borrows from a list of movies too long to mention, but for those of us who salivate for science fiction films with a breath of intelligence, this one does the trick.

BLU RAY REVIEW: In this subsequent viewing of this terrific sci-fi film, I was able to tie up a few elements I didn't quite understand the first time around. I would also have to say this is one of the best looking movies of any genre I've seen. The special features on the Blu ray disc add some clarity on how and why the filmmakers went for a certain look and it truly comes across beautifully.

The other thing I had missed the first time around was the romantic relationship between Jack and Victoria and subsequently Julia. It was there but just wasn't a point of focus. By "there," I mean it wasn't explicit, either by subdued actions or love making. Regarding the later, the most interesting coupling occurs in the swimming pool. It seems clear that Jack's relationship with Victoria seems forced or maybe expected is a better word. He does all the right things that husbands and wives do, but it seems like a matter of routine more than true love. Watch Cruise's face during those intimate close ups. Something is wrong. Of course those memory flashbacks of Julia don't help. When Jack finally does find Julia, it all clicks. Not quickly, but you can see in Jack's reactions, he loves this woman. But why? In the end, he shows how much he loves her. "Oblivion" is also a beautiful love story.

There is nothing like watching a beautiful movie like this on the big screen, but this Blu Ray transfer comes damn close. The 1080p transfer is spectacular in every respect and certainly will be a show off piece to a good system. It comes in the original aspect ratio of 2.39:1 and does a great job replicating the original film. The dystopian world is now essentially uninhabited and the stark whites and various shades contrast nicely with deep dark blacks. When the story moves underground, shadows and shadings of grey prevail. But even when Jack retreats to his cabin in the wilderness, we get beautiful greens and various earth tones in all their splendor. I could see no encoding issues. The contrast and detail are excellent.

Equaling the visuals is a magnificent DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 audio track. Again put this one on your demo list. If you have sub-woofers, they will get a workout as the rumbles coming from many sources including gunfire, rockets and explosions. The surrounds are constantly in play with movement from side to side, back and forth as the drone ships fly around. Dialog is clear and well presented. Ambient noise is ever present as well.

Extras include an excellent commentary track by Tom Cruise and director Joseph Kosinski, a 48 minute "making of" documentary, some deleted scenes and get this, an isolated musical score by M83 in Dolby TruHD 5.1 (24 bit, 96kHz). A great package to own.
