Universal Mc-incredible Hulk [dvd W/movie Cash/ws] Review

The second film to be produced directly by Marvel seems eager to prove why comic book companies should exercise direct control over their films. Rather than being nothing more than a new director's take on an old classic, The Incredible Hulk is both an engaging film and a love letter to every other incarnation of the The Hulk that proceeded it. This film truly endeavors to understand and assimilate the entire history of the character into one new project, and boy does it succeed.

At the center of The Incredible Hulk is an ambitious attempt to marry the two most popular and conflicting visions of the character. The film borrows many elements from the fondly remembered 1970s television series but also incorporates many of the more important elements from the comic book. It's a tough balancing act, but the film makes the disparate elements mix together in a way that makes complete sense and (I believe), leaves fans of both series feeling satisfied. The origin and characterization come largely from the TV series (though, thankfully, it's Dr. BRUCE Banner this time), but the more memorable supporting characters and conflicts from the comic are worked in as well (though Rick Jones was quite fortunately forgotten). Additionally, the enemy is a highly logical choice from the comic book series. Finally, the bad memories of a mutated Nick Nolte are beginning to subside.

The film also incorporates minor elements from the TV movies, the previous film (which is neither acknowledged nor completely contradicted), and even the previous Hulk video game. Of course there are also many wonderful nods to fans of each of the Hulk incarnations. The flashing danger light, the appearance of student reporter "Jack McGee," and Stan Lee's cameo proved to be my personal favorites. Lou Ferrigno also receives a far better cameo than in the previous film.

Most importantly, whether you have any interest in previous Hulk incarnations or not, this film is exceptionally well plotted. It resists the urge to shine the light fully on Hulk or Dr. Banner, instead carefully developing the two in unison. Dr. Banner (masterfully played by Ed Norton, who actually outshines Bill Bixby) gets farther than his television counterpart was ever allowed, and that experience necessarily changes him. The transformation is satisfying, yet still allows the franchise to return to familiar territory by the end.

In parallel, the monster also receives his share of development, though this isn't made clear until the end. His final scene cements this film's brilliant unison of television series and comic book, leaving no doubt that this is the most impressive project ever to come out of the Hulk franchise. I was left so excited, so convinced for the first time that the character had truly come to life, that I almost expected Doctor Strange and the Defenders to show up in the next moment. For only the third time in all my movie going experiences, a beloved comic book character actually seemed real (or at least possible), even in spite of the sometimes questionable computer animation.

Finally, true Marvel fans will be amazed to see just how much continuity this two hour film packs. Clear and meaningful ties are made to Captain America, Iron Man, and S.H.I.E.L.D., and just you wait for the film's final scene! While DC is still trying to decide who should play Superman and Batman for their Justice League movie, you can rest assured that Marvel is getting ready to tie their films together in a meaningful and impressive way. The Marvel Universe has truly made the move into Hollywood and, with The Incredible Hulk as a shining example, it's safe to believe that they've just begun delivering everything a humble fan boy could ever hope for.

This is a review for East West Entertainment's Double Feature DVD of THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME and THE EVIL MIND or THE CLAIRVOYANT.

THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME (1932) dby Irving Pichel & Ernest B.Schoedshack. Joel McCrea, Fay Wary, Robert Armstrong, Leslie Banks. Bob Rainsford, played by Joel McCrea, shipwrecks in uncharted waters and lands on an almost uninhabited island owned by Russian hunter Count Zaroff. The count has a couple of guests, played by Robert Armstrong and Fay Wray and he also has an oddball hobby, hunting to the death anyone foolish enough to land on his island. I love this movie, one of the all-time greats contains things that influenced action/adventure fimmakers for years to come. Made by the team that made KING KONG in 1933.

THE EVIL MIND aka THE CLAIRVOYANT (1934) dby Maurice Elvey. Claude Rains, Fay Wray, Mary Clare, Benfield. Claude Rains character is running a mind reading scam in large vaudeville halls but when he clicks minds with a certain woman, strange things begin to happen. Well done early Brit talkie, all things considered an exciting film.

The picture qualtiy of THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME is no great shakes and required continual TV picture adjustments lest the screen appeared to be in a white out. I doubt that this is the highest quality print available but for the price it's watchable.

And finally, THE EVIL MIND aka THE CLAIRVOYANT is listed everywhere as 80 minutes long but this print comes in at only 67 minutes length. Whatever's missing doesn't hurt the story, in my opinion, but I guess those of us who bought this version of THE EVIL MIND
will have to be clairvoyants to figure it out.

Paramount Gold-american Beauty [dvd/ws/gold Foil O-sleeve] Review

I read somewhere that the overwelmingly red look of American Beauty is a symbol for blood and roses. Represented in the film by the flower petals in Lester Burnham's fantasies, and the blood spilt when the sadness that hovers beneath bears its face. The title of American Beauty does not refer to the pretty surfaces that hide the anguish of these people, but the beauty of their souls when dealing with that anguish. Many reviewers have considered the title to be ironic, it isn't. I've heard Kevin Spacey say that this film is about context, because taken out of context the behaviour of these characters seem bizzare and even phsycotic, but out with in the context of their messy lives or indeed anybody's life, it seems natural. If I tell you that Kevin Spacey plays a character who is obsessed with the idea of sleeping with his daughter's best friend, a daughter who constantly anounces her hatred of her parents, a woman so obsessed with appearances that happiness is but a memory to her, a loner who makes his living as a drug dealer with a firm rigid father living in denial about his son and himself, you would guess that there would be no one to like in this film. You would be wrong. This film is magical in the way it lets identify with these characters, care for them and worry about their outcome. Infact the ideas of American Beauty are nothing new. The persuit of happiness through the abanodoning of materialistic possesions and the satisfaction of primal, animal and natural desires was the exact same premise for Fight Club. This could be a middle aged version of that film. The family turmoil closely resembles Ang Lee's The Ice Storm 1998, and like that film, American Beauty ends in tragedy. But as with all masterpieces its not the "point" that counts, but how you get there. Just like the fact that anything new you learn in life is the history you don't know, most originality in movies is the movies you haven't seen and the novel's you haven't read. The fact that the film remains a masterpiece is a credit to the execution of those ideas, not their originality. Our hero is Lester Burnham a man who goes quits his job, black mails his boss, and goes wild for a year. His journey of self-discovery is not what your average citizen would call moral, yet we still sympathise. My favourite scene in the film is where Lester meets Ricky(Wes Bently) outside a part. Ricky sells marijuana for a living and makes a lot of money. Lester tells him that when he was his age he "flipped burgers all summer long" for very little money. "That sucks" says Ricky, "No actually it was wonderful." The heart of the film is this scene, Lester's yearning for those years where his whole life was ahead of him, when he believed he coul do anything, when he wasn't such a "loser". This purity is the Beauty to which the title refers. Ricky Fitts is the boy next door, a loner who likes to film people. His father is a rigid military man. Both Wes Bently and Chris Cooper who play father and son respectively give monumental performance equal to Kevin Spacey's oscar winner. Their family is a contrast to Lester's, and in its tragedy, emotional complexity and heart break exceeds it. Ricky's catatonic mother is perhaps what Lester would have become had he not taken charge of his life. I have tried to define this film, but its not a film that can be defined. It is one to be experienced. If I tell that the sight of a paper bag blowing in the wind will amaze you, you find it very silly indeed. Acredit then to this film that when Ricky show us a video of a paper bag blowing in the wind, it is indeed a breathtakingly beautiful sight.

Fishes Review

As fish swim and survive between the glass walls of an aquarium, so does our motley group of misfits attempt to stay sane while being trapped during a major rain storm in Tom Dowtin's home on stilts in the Hollywood Hills. Tom was unable to attend his "big break" studio game show pilot, where he was to be the host, due to the storm and subsequent mud slide, which has closed the road in front of his home. Tom and his group of friends, attempt to salvage the aborted night. VABANK - DVD Movie Review

"Vabank" is a Juliusz Machulski 1981 atypical crime/comedy about a bank heist. The humor is dry and ironic. The motivation for the crime is revenge and justice, not petty theft.

Set in 1934, the film opens with an expert safe cracker being released from prison after completing a six-year sentence. He is approached by two aspiring thieves wishing to recruit his talents in a bank heist. He becomes interested when he learns that the man who helped send him to prison is a crocked bank manager working for the target bank. He also learns that a friend of his was murdered by thugs working for the bank. Robbing this bank will allow him to avenge the injustice that had been perpetrated on him and his friend.

Although the story is not too complex, it is involved. The suspense built up as the story unfolded. You wonder if they will pull off the heist. I loved how the story came together at the end.

Juliusz Machulski may be best known for the comedies he directed, with "Seksmisja" being his most well known and my personal favorite. "Vabank" is different, having a serious tone with some comedy to break up the tension. It is entertaining and one that gets more interesting as it progresses.
