Writer and historian Gore Vidal ran for the office of U.S. senator for the state of California. This movie follows him throughout his Democratic primary campaign. His most prominent opponent was then-Governor Jerry Brown.

Vidal's campaign was very unusual in that he basically refused to speak about issues in 10 second soundbites and platitudes. Instead he gave speeches using his own intellectual lecture style, making historical references and trying to prove his point that he was the only "serious candidate" (his words). During the time of this movie, Vidal published a long essay titled 'Second American Revolution'.

The movie follows candidate Vidal as he visits fundraisers, restaurants and even the unemployment office. He is asked by one man why he chose to compete within the Democratic Party. This is because Vidal has said that both political parties are corrupt. Vidal's answer is that he has tried the third party route before (referring to the antiwar People's Party) and that was unsuccessful. He also speaks about having "grown up in the senate" because his blind grandfather Thomas Gore was a Democratic senator from Oklahoma.

If I had to pick an issue that Mr. Vidal really tried to make his own, it would be his attacks on the military-industrial complex. He felt that the United States should stop intervening in the affairs of other countries and that the defense budget should be reduced. He attacks many establishment politicians, including Jerry Brown, for being bought by defense contractors.

At the end of the movie, Vidal makes an assessment of his campaign effort. While he was pleased that people turned out to see him speak, he is bothered by the media coverage and the election process. He states that he should have spent some of his own money in order to win. Vidal's primary opponent Jerry Brown was defeated in the general election by San Diego mayor Pete Wilson.
