Brad Pitt makes his movie debut in this touching story about a young American searching for the cure to a rare skin disease that will kill him if he is exposed to light. In a small town on the Adriatic, a local healer has provided him a cure - but it`s a cure that can only last for three days. Realising that this may be his only chance to break free from the prison of his illness, Rick decides to live those three days to the fullest. Rick finds respite in the form of a young American girl. Together they fall in love, knowing that their love can never last, yet each secretly hoping for a miracle... The film was shot in pre-war Yugoslavia during the summer of 1988. As editing neared completion civil war tore apart the region and much of the footage was lost. In 1996, after a five-year search, all of the lost footage was found and returned to producer Andjelo Arandjelovic, who worked on getting a distribution deal for the film, before it ended up getting released direct-to-video.

I found this a wonderful film about a young man's struggle with his illness, its potentially fatal consequences, and his decision on how to live with it. I thought Brad Pitt did a wonderful job as did Guy Boyd as the father. To me it was the way he handled a difficult script that shows the quality of actor he is. Many people will not like the theme, the script or the way it was handled. It is not for everyone. But it is for me.

FACE/OFF Review

Not giving a book report summary of the plot or acting critiques here. Just focusing on the Blu Ray transfer itself. Should you check on any of my reviews, and I hope that you do, that is what you will get, only a discussion of the quality of the transfer.

The video transfer onto Blu Ray, as opposed to the standard def version of Face Off, offers an improvement in both resolution and shadow depth....it is not the best video transfer I have ever seen and there are some scenes that appear soft and perhaps muted via the compression, but never the less, the video transfer to Blu Ray is good. There aren't any hints of video banding, aliasing or artifacts. Some snow or grain can be seen if you look for it but it is not very apparent or in any way distracting.

The audio is the star of this transfer, tho the audio on the Standard Def version was also good. You are offered DTS 5.1 or 5.1 EX. I preferred the DTS audio and, tho it is lossy, the disc is still demo worthy as it will definitely give your audio system a huge workout. This is a loud movie and, at one point, I had to turn the volume down a touch. There is excellent use of the discreet channels and panning of effects from front to back and side to side. Your sub woofer is kicking out the jams producing as much bottom end as your system can handle. My system is very high end audiophile gear and it was wonderful to hear it put to good use.

The extras provide deleted scenes, an alternate ending (which I am glad they didn't use) and a lengthy and comprehensive 'Making of'. Commentary tracks are included as well as a very interesting bio of John Woo.

I have long loved this movie. As I said, the standard DVD version was not bad at all. Therefore, the jump to Blu Ray doesn't provide an earth shaking difference but it is still a great BluRay and well worth buying.

All my movie reviews are of this nature and focus only on the quality of the transfer to BluRay so check them and see if they are of help as well.
Hopefully, this review has been of some help to you in determining your purchase, hope I am on the correct path with a review of the transfer quality as opposed to providing plot summaries.

Tarpon (Institutional Use) Review

This is a timeless classic which every afficionado of the 70s or Key West should own. The visuals and cinematography are stunning and they convey a certain sense of nostalgia for a bygone era. This is also amongst the first documentaries that captures the environmental spirit and dangers that haphazardous fishing can cause.

Most of the film is rather zen, with beautiful slow motion spreads of the Tarpon as they jump out of the water. Interlaced with those moments, you have interviews with various famous fishermen and literary minds and shots of the life and culture of Key West. The deep Floridian accents can be a little hard to follow at times, but one can't help but appreciate the charming sense of contentment with their surroundings the main protagonists display.

One particularly powerful scene displays a contrast between the style of life these fishermen and friends live in, and the beginning of the commercial touristy aspects of Key West.

Aside from that, the film is very nicely timed in the sense that its not too long and not too short and at the end of the day, one is left with a deeply satisfying experience that isn't spoiled by any modern holywood tradeoffs or forced political messages.

Enchanting comedy about love, the movies, and love of the movies. Martino (Giogio Passotti) is a shy, introverted night watchman at Turin's Mole Antonelliana, the National Museum of Cinema. He spends his days filming the people and places of Turin, and spends his nights editing his film and watching silent movies. One night he gives sanctuary to Amanda (Francesca Inaudi), a young woman fleeing from the police. He allows her to stay with him for a few days while she waits for her boyfriend, known as the Angel (Fabio Troiana), to show up. The Angel is a car thief who is saving money to buy himself a Ferrari.

Upon his arrival an unusual love triangle develops, in which the two men wait for Amanda to decide which one she wants to be with. Unfortunately she is unable to make up her mind. She is still infatuated with the handsome Angel, but is growing ever fonder of the shy, retiring Martino. And while they wait, Martino opens Amanda's eyes to the wonders of the cinema.

The growth of the friendship, and eventual love between Martino and Amanda is beautifully realized. Each of the characters, including the tough Angel, is likeable, and there is good chemistry between them. The movie is sweet, and often hilarious. The funniest sequence occurs when Martino challenges the Angel to fight for Amanda. The Angel doesn't want to, but is forced to in order to maintain his macho image. So they fight, or rather, the Angel beats the snot out of Martino.

The actors are terrific, especially Passotti.

It is a shame this wonderful film is not widely available in the US. Somebody should pick this one up for distribution!

Coming to America / Norbit Review

I can't believe the reviews here. It's true Norbit was not classic Eddie Murphy but it is mildly entertaining. The trouble with a comedic brilliance is that once you've reached the top, everyone expects every word to be hilarious. It must be impossible to continue working when everything you do is tainted by what you've done. This is a slick made for money and gimic type movie but Eddie's Work in it is fantastic is dumbed down by the script.
In the age of reality tv, I'm happy that they are still offerings like this.
I found it more entertaining that I did Coming to America.
