A bitter, alcoholic "religious" father has an unnatural hatred for his wayward daughter Anna (Eartha Kitt) and when his greedy family hatches a plan to marry her off for money to the college graduate son of an old family friend, the old man nearly has a seizure. But he's brow-beaten into retrieving her by his scheming son-in-law. The father drove Anna out of the house years ago due to her alleged promiscuity and she's now a waterfront prostitute and the sometime girlfriend of sailor Danny (Sammy Davis Jr.). She's down-and-out so she reluctantly returns home with her father. But the unexpected happens and she falls in love with the young college man. Then the stuff hits the fan as the wedding day draws near as the father has plans of his own. Based on Philip Yordan's play, this b&w adaptation is juicy and well acted. Kitt is good as Anna and Davis Jr. matches her as the footloose Danny. The entire cast is in tune with the tone of the script and the underlying theme (incest) surfaces despite the restrictions of the time. Davis sings the title song and even gets to show off his dancing skills. The DVD looks good and is worth a look for those interested in rare, unusual films. Very adult for the time and very well done all around. Recommended.

Love on the Dole Review

A powerful, poignant drama set in depression-era England, "Love on the Dole" examines the crushing effects of unemployment and poverty on a working class family that sinks into despair and degradation as one after another of them lose their jobs and their hopes for a better future.

The script is bleak and bitter, with a distinctly Socialist air. The entire cast is superb, with top honors going to a young Deborah Kerr, in one of her earliest screen roles. The only drawback to the film, at least for American audiences, is that it is somewhat difficult to follow the dialogue early on due to the thick accents of the actors. But this problem disappears as the film progresses and the viewer gets used to the accents.

There are no happy endings here. The film is gritty and realistic. It is also very timely given the economic state of the world today. Highly recommended for those who like intelligent, meaningful films.

The Rolling Stones - Live at the Max (IMAX - Panorama) Review

Really, only one thing needs to be said about this: it was Bill Wyman's final tour with the Stones. Sure, the sound is good, the playing, excellent, the choice of material, diverse, blah-blah-blah. But I assume you already have "Gimme Shelter": those first three live numbers, that's where the Stones absolutely PEAKED. But this performance was from the 1989 "Steel Wheels" tour, and the Stones had just very recently recovered from two almost fatal blows: 1) Original pianist, Ian Stewart died in 1985, taking - really - the band's integrity with him, God rest his soul; and b) Mick and Keith had both pitched rather embarrassing hissy fits when each produced solo material, thus nearly breaking up the band. But here, they're in fine form, and it's the beginning of the final era of the Stones when they'd drag along 4-piece horn sections and several backup vocalists, et al. But, as I said, this is worth the purchase, just for the presence of Bill Wyman. A great show, too! Now, about a monh later, and having now received this, I doubt that it is the exact same "Stones At The Max" that I/we saw at the IMAX Theater in in Atlanta in 1994. The vocals are inaudible (and it irritates the mortal $#!+ out me that after that third "flash-pot" thing goes off at the beginning, you don't hear "Start Me Up" louder. Still...you get what you pay for, and, as I said, this was Bill Wyman's final tour - and that alone justifies this...this "remake."

Easily my favourite Australian movie.If you want to see the Australian outback captured in all its glory with the typical dry Aussie wit this is such good viewing.A superb cast executes this story perfectly.Every time I watch this it feels like i am returning home.This would be Jack Thompsons best performance as he spent time as a youth shearing sheep he fits the rol as Foley the gun shearer.A must for any Australian movie fan.
