Knights of the Teutonic Order (Krzyzacy) Review

I read the book about ten times in my adolescence and up to my sixties! So I can look at this film in polish (even though I don't understand a word of polish) and fully understand the film. The film is as close to the novel as you can possibly get except for one or two things that don't really have a bearing on the story (for instance the fact the battle of Tannenberg:Grunwald takes place five years after Zbysko's wife Danushka dies). And God knows how Henryk Sienkiewycz knew how to write a story! He wrote Quo Vadis, and also By Fire and Sword (which relates the polish view of those events better made known to us by Taras Bulba). Both novel and film are packed full with heroism, love, hatred, treachery, blood and medieval pageantry. The film dates back to 1962 and if you're out only for special effects, you'll be somewhat disappointed. The battle of Grunwald back in 1410 saw some 50 to 80 thousand knights and men at arms fighting it out in what became the greatest battle of the entire Middle Ages. Well You won't see that many people on the screen but you will see a historically correct rendering of the battle.

My only criticism on this DVD is the subtitles which are too fast and sometimes a split second late or early: the timing is sometimes not exactly on key. But that is a minor problem in my view: one gets used to that rather quickly.
Besides that I can only advise people to view this film. You won't be disappointed.
