Mi Jihong (John Lone) is a quite, dependable, solitary figure in the small, remote Chinese village he lives in. He shares his house with his rather dynamic sister, Mi Alian (Tao Hong), an extremely focused young woman who knows exactly what she wants and how to get it. Mi Alian's best friend, and the object of Mi Jihong's secret desire, is Luhua (Coco Lee), the strikingly beautiful yet woefully under-talented daughter of the village chief. When Mi Jihong witnesses Luhua's crushing humiliation at the hands of a egomaniacal director during a movie audition, a half-formed dream suddenly coalesces into solid reality-Mi decides he can make a television series, one which Luhua can star in and his entire village can produce. Surely, assumes Mi, with the right equipment anyone can shoot a movie. Mi mortgages his home, buys a digital camera and begins to enlist the help of his entire village. His best friend, Ma Xiaojun (Yuan Ding) promises to produce for him in return for a leading role. He convinces Mi they can raise their budget by charging the villagers to audition for them. When the Village Chief hears of the project (and the prospect of money to be made) he offers up initial funding in exchange for a leading role for his beloved daughter. Suddenly, Mi not only has his dream-girl in the film with him but the money to make it happen. This could be simpler than he had hoped. Off course, there are only so many leading roles to give out, and once the villagers discover the majority of roles are for bandits, a revolt is in the making. Combined with an ongoing rivalry for the love of Alian between egg farmers Wang Ergou (AnZi) and Wang Shengli (Xia Yu) who are now cast as feuding warriors, and Mi Jihong's inability to film those fantastical aerial combat and action sequences he's seen on TV, the series is threatening to collapse before it gets started. Even Mi's dream of being near Luhua is in jeopardy as Luhua is pulled between the arranged marriage her father has planned for her and her apparently-soon-to-be-dashed dreams of being an actress. Still, if anyone can make an epic-kung-fu-romantic-action-comedy television series a reality while saving the heart and soul of the village, it's Mi Jihong. One of the best romantic comedies I have seen in a long time. Completely engaging and the added bonus of John Lone at his best. I hardly noticed the subtitles, the performances are that good. Highly recommended.
