Russ Meyer's second film Eve and the Handyman continues in the style and spirit of his earlier Immoral Mr Teas (1959) in presenting an essentially silent film with voice over narration. Eve (Eve Meyer) uses her private eye skills to follow Handyman (Anthony James-Ryan) as he goes from one job to the next. Another parallel to Mr. Teas is how the Handyman travels from one odd situation to the next, much as Mr. Teas did as a salesman in his feature. The Handyman is much more innocent though. He seems to be on a righteous path - abstaining from worldly desires. Not a determined hitchhiker or a crazy game of pinball can get this innocent man to stray from the straight and narrow. Eve seems to be pleasantly amused by the daily actions of the Handyman. Russ Meyer certainly doesn't disappoint with the ending which offers a surprising twist and reason for the entire film.Like Teas before it this is a quite innocent film by today's standards. The nudity is playful and in somewhat good taste. Meyer does not seem to be pushing the envelope asa much as he had done a year earlier. This film acts more as an historical marker in the development of more adult oriented films that Meyer would make later. As it is it's inoffensive and a kind of quirky fun viewing experience.
The standard definition DVD has the same picture quality issues that are present on many of the ArrowFilms releases but considering the age of this film isn't really a problem. The mono sountrack does quite well with both the narration and the film score. Unfortunately there are no extra features.
