The Royal Ballet (1959) Review

This is a very rare, out of print video. It's a Paul Czinner movie that was shown in movie theaters when it was first released. The performances were filmed live - I think in the 50's. It is absolutely wonderful, and the footage of Fonteyn in the second act of Swan Lake comes closer than anything I have ever seen to the actual impression one got of seeing her dance this live (I saw her live much later than this, with Nureyev, but this is much more representative of her approach to the role than the vhs/dvd of her & Nureyev with the Wiener Staatsopernballett). If you are thinking about buying this be forewarned: a lot of it is very old fashioned (the Swan Lake pas de deux is danced as a pas de deux a trios). That said - it's brilliant and includes Swan Lake act 2 (Fonteyn, Somes & Bryan Ashbridge as Benno, with Antoinette Sibley in the corps!), The Firebird (Fonteyn & Somes) and Ondine (Fonteyn, Somes with Julia Farron as Berta and Alexander Grant as Tirrenio). Fonteyn's shadow dance in Ondine alone is worth the price of this video!

White Comanche (1968) Review

White Comanche"...1967/Color. Oy Vey...This was bad. Even a die hard oater lover like me had a hard time with this one. I thought with Joseph Cotton and William Shatner, I would find some redeeming value, but alas I did not.

Twin brothers who are half white and half Comanche(both played by Shatner, and I forgive him for this), have conflicts between them and with their identities as well. Probably worth the view for a few good laughs..

If you love these old oaters, you should check out the Great American Western series put out by Platinum Disc. "White Comanche" may be found on Volume 20 of "The Great American Western Series", (also included in Vol 2 of the 10 pack set).Great American Western V.20, The also includes, a fun look at an old Roy Rogers flick, "The Bells of San Angelo" and a great documentary about the John Ford Westerns. Don't expect anything like a big studio transfer, or the attention that is paid to the classics on these sets(although some look pretty good). They all have pretty decent sound though and are all enhanced In DD 5.1. They are priced right, and is a better way to go than buying all these old westerns separately.

This DVD was an improvement over First Contact. It has more humor and best of all more Krista Allen. People who were disappointed with FC because Krista Allen was hardly in it will love this DVD because she's featured quite a lot in this one.I know of at least 4 scenes that appear on this DVD that I've seen bouncing around the internet and there are even more KA scenes on this disk.Of course this video is a continuation of the story started in FC. Emanuelle is helping a group of aliens try to understand sex and love. The quirky humor that was in the first one is even better on this DVD. I also thought there was a more coherent story that makes its point clearly at the end.The only extras on this disk are bare bones ones. There are bios for some of the cast and Roger Corman. Heaartbeat Review

I found out about this documentary by reading a profile of the filmmaker, director, (and daughter of the artist) wunderkind. I have always been a fan of his sculptures and the way she (Ms. Fairweather) was describing her relationship to the late artist John Chamberlain was so touching. Apparently, this was an 8 year project that she started when she was 14!!! This was an insider's look to such a groundbreaking artist!! I wish there were more films like this documenting the private lives of our great creative minds. But that's not to say that this film only focuses on their family life, but instead is incredibly informative about his work and the evolution of his 60+ year career.
